BRIDGEVIEW, Ill. — Just when the Chicago Fire seemed to have a settled back line, German center back Arne Friedrich has been ruled out for up to four weeks with a Grade II strain in his right hamstring.

The German defender picked up the injury in the Fire’s 2-1 win over Sporting Kansas City last Saturday. He said after the game that the hamstring had been bothering him earlier that week. Friedrich missed Wednesday’s practice with flu-like symptoms after the Fire took Tuesday off.

The Vancouver Whitecaps forward — whose incredible volley against Seattle last season made headlines around world — has done it again. This time, he smashed a stoppage-time volley to earn the Whitecaps a 1-1 draw against Toronto FC in the first leg of the Amway Canadian Championship final.

Toronto FC came so painfully close to winning the first leg of the Amway Canadian Championship finals in Vancouver on Wednesday.

But they came away with a 1-1 draw because of Eric Hassli’s stunning volley in stoppage time. Even Reds head coach and technical director Aron Winter had to admire it despite the pain it inflicted.
